Scotland's universities 'should not be seen as cheap option'

Scotland's universities should not be seen as a cheap option for overseas EU students, it has been claimed.

Scottish education secretary Michael Russell met with key European officials last week to discuss the fact that at present, the law requires Scottish taxpayers to foot the bill for non-UK EU students that come to study in the country.

"Part of the attraction of Scottish universities is their cosmopolitan nature and students from Europe and beyond have made a significant contribution to university life around the country," he commented.

"However, with the cost of EU students to the Scottish taxpayer having risen almost fourfold since the start of the last decade, we cannot allow our universities to become a cheap option for students who have to pay to study in their home countries."

Government figures published last month revealed that the number of EU students enrolling at Scottish universities has risen by 17 per cent over the last year.
