Preston students offered language advice
February 11 2011
Students from Cardinal Newman College in Preston attended a special event this week aimed at encouraging them to study a foreign language.
The pupils were given advice from local business owners and graduates on how studying a language can improve their employment prospects, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
The day was organised by French businesswoman Lory Barreau, who runs Business Vector Ltd.
"The number of students studying languages has fallen dramatically and we want to encourage them by showing that it is not just for holidays or teaching. Having a second language can open up all sorts of doors," she told the publication.
Nadia Tan Panza, who studied at the University of Central Lancashire, told the students how she came to England as a foreign exchange student.
"Because I spoke English I was able to come here," she explained.
"I work as an export credit controller which involves us dealing with people from America, Spain, France and Italy, not just chasing up bills but also dealing with transport companies, where the drivers don't always speak English."
A study carried out recently by the National Centre for Languages revealed that fewer state school students are studying foreign languages now than in previous years.
