Changes announced to Welsh teacher training incentives

Changes have been made to the Welsh Assembly Government's initial teacher training incentives.
Education minister Leighton Andrews confirmed that priority incentives of £9,000 will be given to eligible postgraduate students starting courses in maths, chemistry, Welsh and physics.
In addition, grants of £6,000 will be made available to those on teacher training courses for modern foreign languages, biology and general/combined sciences.
However, grants will no longer be available for those on primary postgraduate courses and students taking teacher training courses in other subjects.
"We have considered carefully the incentives which have been available for postgraduate initial teacher training courses in the current economic climate and jobs market," Mr Andrews commented.
In related news, ministers in England confirmed last month that secondary school teacher training places are to be cut by 14 per cent this year, meaning 2,290 fewer places will be available.
