Scottish entrepreneur 'planning to open school'

One of Scotland's wealthiest businessmen is planning to open his own school.

Entrepreneur Jim Coll is keen to set up a training college for youngsters between the ages of 14 and 16 on the site of the old Weirs Pumps plant in Glasgow, the Sun reports.

"The idea came to me when we had some young people apply to work with us but the truth is they just weren't up to it," he told the publication.

"But I didn't want to give up on them."

Mr Coll, who owns 85 companies and employs 5,000 workers, said he does not want to see an entire generation lost to the unemployment queue.

"This recession has been very difficult on the younger generation," he added.

Speaking this week, Sarah Clover, sales and marketing director at notgoingtouni.co.uk, said the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance and rising tuition fees mean that more people are likely to choose vocational options over university.
