Scottish council launches new scheme for school leavers

East Ayrshire Council has announced details of a new scheme aimed at preparing school leavers for the world of work.

Council leader Douglas Reid said a number of successful Scottish business people have volunteered to help with the initiative, including Craig Stevenson of Braehead Foods, Keith Murray of Lochaven, Marie Macklin of the Klin Group and Norman Drummond of Columba 1400.

"To help our youngsters succeed at the highest level in the 21st century we need to use the mix of excellent teachers and well run schools already in place, and then add to that the knowledge, experience and support of top business people," he said.

"I will be meeting with head teachers today to discuss how this initiative will complement the work they already do to give our young people the support they deserve to take them wherever they want to go in their working lives."

Mr Reid noted that the council is already above average in terms of positive outcomes for local school leavers.

Speaking earlier this month, Sarah Clover of Notgoingtouni.co.uk said the government's decision to increase university tuition fees is likely to lead to more school leavers going into vocational training.
