Paratroopers drop in on schoolchildren

A school in East Riding hosted some special visitors this week, with a group of paratroopers dropping in.

The soldiers, who serve with the 299 Royal Engineers, visited Cottingham Croxby Primary School to thank pupils for parcels they sent to Afghanistan at Christmas, the East Riding Mail reports.

Pupils were treated to parachute roll displays and shown equipment.

Headteacher David Ledgard spent weeks collecting things to send to the frontline.

"Items included combs, toiletries, wet wipes and boiled sweets – just little things to remind them of home," he told the publication.

"We felt it was important soldiers do not feel forgotten about. Often, they do a thankless task."

Pupil Ashley Brownless said the children even made joke books for the soldiers.

In related news, Cottingham Croxby Primary school recently beat off stiff competition to be named as the Sustainable Travel School of the Year.

Pupils are encouraged to walk and cycle to school in order to reduce congestion.
