Bolton primary pupils embrace work of Shakespeare

Although Shakespeare is not usually taught until children reach secondary school, pupils at one Bolton primary have been keen to embrace the playwright's work.

Youngsters at the Saints Osmond and Andrews Roman Catholic Primary School in Breightmet have been recreating scenes from some of his most famous plays as part of a programme organised by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Bolton News reports.

Pupil Lauren Holt, age ten, said the project has helped pupils gain confidence.

Teacher Jacky Devine told the publication: "Ultimately I would like to see Shakespeare studied earlier during foundation stage. Shakespeare's plays are meant to be acted and on your feet, not just read. Their vocabulary has been expanded and they understand and develop empathy."

She added that the initiative has been so popular because "acting is playing, and no one plays as well as children".

In other Bolton education news, Ladybridge High School has been named as one of the most improved schools in the country.
