Parents unite to save historic Staffordshire school from closure
February 18 2011
The staff of St Dominic's school in Staffordshire will not have to look for new teaching jobs once the current academic year is up after parents stepped in to avert its imminent closure.
At the start of the year, the trustees of the school, the Dominican Congregation, announced plans to close it, citing ongoing financial difficulties.
This prompted parents to form an action group and come up with a viable economic plan which, according to the BBC, has been approved by the trustees, meaning no teaching jobs will be lost at the end of the year.
Under the terms of a new agreement, the school will be transferred to a new charitable trust, though members of the congregation will keep their places on the board and the parents' group will continue to pay the religious body rent for the grounds and building.
Welcoming the development, headteacher Pat Adamson said: "The unity demonstrated over the past few weeks will carry us forward to reach new heights. This is a key time in the life of a wonderful, progressive school."
Meanwhile, Sussex County Council has decided to put plans to scrap 62 school crossing patrols on hold, for now at least.
