Phonics in reading tests 'a good idea'
February 22 2011
Introducing phonics into reading tests will help children to improve their skills, it has been suggested.
Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said research shows that boys in particular suffer where reading is concerned.
"It is very important that any youngsters who are having problems with the phonic code are identified and given special lessons straight away [so] that the problems are solved," he commented.
The government announced plans last year to give reading progress checks to six-year-olds.
"Testing when children are young is an excellent idea and that should go ahead. Teachers should stop criticising the idea or opposing it and then hopefully we can get all children [to] learn to read before the age [of] seven," Mr Seaton added.
