Welsh education system 'needs to change'

The Welsh education system is in need of an overhaul, an expert has claimed.

Professor David Reynolds, who is based at the University of Southampton, suggested that the reforms need to be driven by the government, because the schools system "cannot drive itself at the moment", Wales Online reports.

"I think its head knows there has to be change and recognises it's got to change, but if you've had ten years of something else your heart's in another place," he said.

"I don't think they've appreciated how much change there has to be if we're going to pick ourselves up off the bottom. But people know it's got to be different and that's a positive."

Speaking earlier this month, Welsh education minister Leighton Andrews said the country's young people "deserve better".

"Education and the right of all to access it and reach their potential has been at the heart of our modern Welsh culture," he added.

"Much of what we need to do will take time and it will be hard. It will require honesty, leadership and a new approach to accountability."
