Youngsters shown consequences of dangerous driving
February 24 2011
Pupils at one Somerset school were provided with a realistic demonstration this week on the consequences of dangerous driving.
Students from Buckler's Mead Community School were given a talk by firefighters who then demonstrated how they would cut victims from a wreckage following a crash, the Somerset Guardian reports.
Pupil Brendan Timewell, 15, was one of those selected to volunteer as a mock victim.
"I was a bit nervous when they were using the cutting tools so close to me. If everyone could experience that they would all drive a lot safer," he told the newspaper.
Deputy headteacher Helen Readman hailed the demonstration a success.
"It was a fantastic learning experience and I am quite sure we now have some safer drivers of the future," she commented.
"They've been really interested and I think found some of it unexpected."
In other Somerset education news, a group of pupils from St Benedict's School in Midsomer Norton were celebrating this week after coming third in the England and Ireland First Lego League Final.
