Young people 'let down by careers advice'

Young people are being "badly let down" as far as careers advice is concerned.

This is according to Sarah Clover, sales and marketing director at Notgoingtouni.co.uk, who suggested that many school leavers are not being told about alternatives to university.

"Apprenticeships and other kinds of vocational training really are great alternatives to university, because you get paid while you are learning, there is a good chance you'll get a job at the end of it and you haven't got any debt – what's not to like?" she commented.

Ms Clover noted that many university graduates now feel frustrated because they have gained degrees but are unable to find employment.

Research published earlier this month by Totaljobs.com found that 38 per cent of university leavers have been forced to claim Jobseeker's Allowance since leaving education.

Furthermore, 42 per cent of those polled said they do not feel that university prepared them for the world of work.
