Cloud computing in schools 'could provide huge benefits'

The adoption of cloud computing in schools could have major benefits, it has been suggested.

Sarah Underwood, magazine and brand editor of ICT for Education, said it would be a "great step forward" if schools chose to adopt this kind of technology.

"There will be some, such as ICT specialist schools and academies, that will use the cloud quite soon, I imagine. Some of those schools and academies are already working groups and have shared managed services, and those managed services could very easily be put in the cloud," she explained.

"It saves them from downtime, maintenance, upgrades, it has shared costs and they don't have to run it for themselves."

It was announced earlier this month that the Higher Education Funding Council for England will be funding shared services in cloud computing for UK colleges and universities as part of a new £12.5 million initiative.
