Russian scientist visits Derbyshire school

A Russian scientist who worked on the country's space programme was in Derbyshire this week to tell students about his experience.

Professor Alexander Martynov visited Trent College in Long Eaton to talk to staff and pupils about his time as head of ballistics at the Russian mission control centre, the Derby Telegraph reports.

The youngsters were shown a film about life in space and told how weightlessness can be a problem for the astronauts.

Professor Martynov also recalled how he met Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.

He revealed that Gagarin was selected ahead of other test pilots because "he was the only one that smiled".

In other Derbyshire education news, it was revealed this week that 13 secondary schools in Derby spent over £1.5 million on supply teachers during the last academic year.

Figures from the TayPayers' Alliance show that while one school spent under £10,000, another in the area spent almost £350,000 during the same period.
