Parent organisation expresses concern over school inspection changes

The Scottish Parent Teacher Council (SPTC) has expressed concern over plans to change the way schools are inspected.

The organisation argued that dropping the ratings system from inspection reports will make it harder for parents to see how well their children's school is doing, the BBC reports.

"The SPTC is concerned that the quality improvement grades will not be in the report, as we feel these are something that parents need to hear directly from HMIE and not from the media," the SPTC stated.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) has proposed to cut down on the number of schools it inspects from August and use smaller teams to inspect schools.

Under new plans, inspection notice periods for primary schools would be reduced from three weeks to two weeks.

Dr Bill Maxwell, chief inspector of the HMIE, told the BBC: "These changes cement in place a fundamental shift in the way that schools are inspected in Scotland.
"We've been working hard to promote inspection as a positive and constructive process, done 'with' a centre or school, not 'to' it."
