Secondary modern teaching in England 'already doing well'

Individuals teaching in secondary modern schools in England, in particular in Kent, are already performing well against the odds, it has been claimed.

While the country boasts a number of grammar schools with pupils who tend to reach higher attainment levels, there are also a number of secondary modern schools where other pupils learn. And many of these pupils start their secondary school life with the belief that they will not reach the top grades at GCSE, it has been claimed.

In an article for the Guardian, Phil Beadle argues that the majority of secondary moderns take a cohort of children who deem themselves already labelled as failures but who go on to achieve above the bottom target.

This, he says, is evidence that those teaching in England at such schools "are doing fantastically against the odds".

His comments follow news that extra support will be given to schools in the county in the National Challenge programme to help them improve standards and see more pupils achieving five GCSEs including maths and English at grade A* to C.
