Gove: Teaching in England 'has been dumbed down'
October 07 2009
Teaching in England has been dumbed down under a Labour government, the shadow education secretary Michael Gove has argued.
Speaking at the Conservative Party conference today, Mr Gove claimed that should the Tories take power at the next election, it would move to break up the educational establishment created by the Labour government.
According to the Guardian, he argued that the best schools may be able to break away from their local authorities.
Besides this, the party intends to encourage more ex-soldiers to become teachers.
"We'll develop a Troops to Teachers programme to get professionals in the army who know how to train young men and women into the classroom, where they can provide not just discipline but inspiration and leadership," he reportedly said.
The Tories have also suggested they will adopt the Swedish model of education for schools and teaching in England should they come to power at the next general election.
