Teaching in England 'set to smarten up'

Those teaching in England at one Birmingham college have been told to smarten up their appearance.

A new dress code which states that no jeans or scruffy items of clothing can be worn to work has been imposed, the BBC reports.

But lecturers at the institution, the Birmingham Metropolitan College, have reportedly not taken too kindly to the new rules.

Nick Varmey of lecturers' union the UCU said the new dress code "undermines the professionalism of staff", the BBC reports. He added that the teachers can work out for themselves what is acceptable attire for teaching at the college in Birmingham.

Nonetheless, a college spokesperson told the broadcaster that staff have always been asked to adhere to a dress code to help convey a professional image.

While not all schools in the country have their own dress codes, a number of institutions do have codes for teachers as well as pupils.
