Teachers in Glasgow offer new sex education curriculum

A new curriculum for sex education has been developed for teachers in Glasgow by the city's council.

In it, all school children, from the first year of primary school at age four, are given some form of sex education lessons - with the youngest children being taught about basic anatomy.

Teaching in the subject is set to continue until the final year of secondary school, when lessons will focus on HIV and Aids.

The council has claimed that the lessons have been given the support of teachers, parents and pupils, although the Scottish Conservative Party has argued that there will be concerns over extending sex education to those in their first year of school.

Deputy leader of Glasgow City Council James Coleman told the Times: "As we understand, this is the first curriculum to give pupils a comprehensive sexual health and relationships education throughout their schools careers."

He added that the curriculum has been developed on a long-term understanding of what both children and parents believe should be in such lessons.
