Teachers in the south to see new academies

Teachers in the south of England can expect to see a number of new academies following a move by schools secretary Ed Balls to approve new developments.

New academies are to be created in Plymouth, Hampshire and East Sussex, while the next stage of development for other academies has also been given the go-ahead.

"I am pleased to announce these new academy proposals. The academies programme has a proven track record of raising standards for some of the most disadvantaged young people in the country, and they are popular with parents," said Mr Balls.

He added that the academies continue to show improved GCSE results, outstripping the national average and that this type of school highlights the way partnerships with sponsors can work to bring benefits for all pupils.

Academies were introduced by the Labour government as a new method to help raise standards in more disadvantaged areas of the country. Originally, sponsors had to provide £2 million in funding, although this necessity is no longer in place.
