London teacher 'livens up science after school'

One teacher at Alexandra Park School in London has taken a more hands-on approach to science teaching, much to the delight of students.

As part of an after-hours scheme designed to promote interest in the Stem subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths, Alexandra Park teacher Oisin Scullion set up a science club where pupils can learn in a hands-on way, the Guardian reports.

According to the newspaper, pupils have learnt about rocket science, and watched their own creations fly some 150 metres skywards.

Pupil Max Peston, 12, told the paper: "I enjoyed building the solid fuel rockets and watching them take off. And I'm now further ahead in certain areas of science than others in my class."

Other schools in the country also run similar clubs started up as a result of the Stemnet project, designed to promote interest in the key Stem subjects.

Currently, Stemnet has set a range of new challenges relating to London 2012, where pupils are urged to explore a range of challenges faced in delivering the games.
