Stammer support extended for teachers in England

Teachers in England are set to receive extra support to help them work with children who stammer.

A new programme of support for teachers was today (October 20th) announced by Michael Palin and schools secretary Ed Balls.

While teachers in London may have already had some support from the Michael Palin centre, the services offered by the centre are set to be expanded, while a similar centre is also due to be created in the north of the country.

"The training and information that schools will receive as part of this programme will mean they can better understand and support pupils who stammer," said Mr Balls.

He added that if children with a stammer get access to the best help as quickly as possible they can often overcome their communication difficulties.

The programme confirmed today offers training, advice and information to help those working with children who stammer.

Michael Palin's father suffered from a stammer. The actor played a character with a stammer in the film A Fish Called Wanda.
