Teachers in Birmingham promote humanitarian concerns

A group of teachers from Birmingham have undertaken their own humanitarian mission to help those at refugee camps in eastern Sudan, a report indicates.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the teachers - led by Ephrahim Bashi from Bordesley Green's Al Hijra School - raised around £20,000 for the trip.

"My passion for teaching children has transcended beyond the four walls of my science lab to that of eastern Sudan, to a people that have been forgotten by the world community," he told the paper.

Mr Bashir added that there are some 750,000 Eritrean refugees on the border of Sudan and that they have been all but forgotten by the world community.

A total of five teachers from three schools are going on the mission to help those in the refugee camps with basic food and education.

Ultimately, the teachers would like to fund a school in the refugee camps, he told the paper.

There have been refugee camps housing Eritreans in Sudan for many years - numerous people headed to the camps as a result of the Eritrean war with Ethiopia.
