Notts teens approve of practical learning
October 28 2009
Teenagers studying in the East Midlands have given their approval to the government's practical learning scheme, it has been reported.
First introduced in September last year, the diploma courses - offered in up to ten subjects - combine classroom teaching with hands-on experience and work placements.
Pupils who complete a diploma then have the option of studying for a higher diploma, NVQ or traditional A-levels.
According to the Nottingham Evening Post, students studying for the construction and built environment qualification feel the diploma offers them more than traditional GCSE courses.
Daniel Leverton, a 15-year-old in the final year of his course at Hadden Park High School in Bilborough, told the newspaper: "Doing hands-on work is much better than being in a classroom. I find we learn much more."
Other students agreed that the opportunity to take part in work experience helped them to decide what careers they might pursue.
