Teachers 'embrace citizenship lessons'

Since its introduction to the curriculum in 2002, citizenship teaching has been adopted well by education providers, it has been claimed.
A new study from the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) as part of the Citizenship Education Longitudinal Study (CELS) shows that citizenship teaching has been accepted by schools and that schools can see the relevance of such an education.
Director of CELS David Kerr said: "It has taken time but there are clear signs in this report that citizenship has become accepted in schools, particularly for its forward looking contribution in engaging young people with current issues."
He added that the lessons are also seen to help prepare young people for life in modern society.
Nonetheless, some challenges do remain in the teaching of the subject, the report found. One citizenship education co-ordinator told the survey that there is little time to cover all areas and that as a result whole topics are on occasion dropped from study.
Last month, the organisation highlighted calls for politicians across the UK to make a renewed commitment to citizenship teaching.
