Racism 'still in schools'

Despite ongoing efforts to raise awareness in schools, racism does still take place, an expert has claimed.

Following the release of a report from the Manifesto Club, which detailed the extent of racism in schools, director of Kidscape Claude Knights said that despite efforts to tackle racism, problems persist.

Despite efforts to promote the acceptance of difference, people are still picked on becuae of race difference, she said.

"The fact that it is happening with all this awareness raising and all of the policies that we have in place is one of the things that I think we need to analyse," said Ms Knights.

She added that it is important that there is not complacency that things are improving because of the amount of resources being targeted at the issue of racism.

The Manifesto Club report suggested that teachers are reporting racist incidences even when children are too young to know the meanings of the terms they have used.
