Parents 'not to blame for admissions deceit'

Parents 'not to blame for admissions deceit'

A parents lobby group has called on the government to improve standards at failing schools, saying that families should not be blamed for lying on school applications.

According to the Campaign for Real Education, while lying should not be condoned, "parents wouldn't need to do this if the politicians were doing their job in providing sufficient good school places".

The campaign's chair Nick Seaton urged politicians to offer a renewed focus on schools unpopular with parents rather than legislate against families.

His comments follow an announcement by schools secretary Ed Balls suggesting parents who are deceptive on their school applications should be made examples of.

Responding to a report by schools adjudactor Ian Craig, the minister pledged to improve public awareness of the issue.

The study had indicated that a media campaign highlighting how dishonest behaviour denies another child a place could be an effective deterrent.
