Intensive teaching boosts Midlands maths
November 04 2009
A programme offering personalised one-to-one maths tuition has helped pupils at a Midlands school learn to enjoy numbers, it has been reported.
According to the Birmingham Post, youngsters formerly struggling with figures at Starbanks Primary in Small Heath have now begun to catch up with their peers.
Known in Starbanks as Numbers Count, the scheme is part of the government's Every Child Counts initiative, which aims to improve learning by adapting teaching styles to each student and capture their imagination.
Former classroom teacher Rajshree Desai - now a dedicated Numbers Count tutor - said the scheme offers far more independence and adaptability than group tuition.
"It is very personalised ... for that half hour each day we are working specifically on the needs of that child," she noted.
The system was first trialled by the government in a pilot ending earlier this year. Official figures revealed students made around a year's progress after just three months of individual lessons.
