Black Country youngsters praised

The achievements of teachers and students at schools across the Midlands have been celebrated this week in an awards ceremony.

Held in Dudley Zoo, the Black Country Challenge Student Awards aimed to highlight the contributions of staff and pupils through the £28 million government-backed programme.

Primary and secondary students from Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton all took part in the scheme, first launched last year.

Awards were presented by the scheme's chief adviser Sir Geoff Hampton and sponsors, while Michael Collie and Satnam Rana from BBC Midlands Today hosted the evening.

Black Country Challenge minister Diana Johnson sent a congratulatory message to the winning students, pointing to improved GCSE grades as evidence education in the region is continuing to improve.

Winners included Wesley Rawlings of Barr Beacon Language College, who won the science prize and Menzies High School Science College's Govind Chopra, who went home with the music award.
