Plans to tackle primary school places shortage in Croydon

A Croydon school cabinet meeting is considering opening a new school to tackle the shortage of primary school places, according to a report published in Thisiscroydontoday.co.uk.

The news site said following the announcement of the intended moves, there will now be a consultation processed carried out among teachers, parents, governors and residents across Croydon.

Under the proposal, Selhurst High, in The Crescent, which was closed a year ago, would be reopened and would provide up to 600 extra places in the next two years.

The news site also reported that the cabinet is also considering the opening of extra reception classes across Croydon.

These are not the only proposals being made in the country to change aspects of the education system. Coun Robert Oliver, Sunderland's Conservative spokesman for children's services, said earlier this month that he welcomed Conservative proposals that campaigned for all schools in the UK to be able to apply for academy status.
