Behaviour cards 'an unnecessary burden'

Behaviour cards 'an unnecessary burden'

Government plans to introduce records of both good and bad behaviour to schools are unnecessary, says an education expert.

The comments from the Good Schools Guide follow proposals to change the School Information Regulations to include such records in annual reports for parents.

According to the Department for Children, Schools and Families, teachers effectively already do this; the alteration would, however, make it a statutory requirement.

Responding to the suggested changes, the guide's regional editor Sue Fieldman questioned whether the measure is necessary.

The government has asked interested parties to submit responses to the proposals by February 2010.

"It's an extra burden put on the teachers quite frankly, who are so bogged down with paperwork and bureaucracy they could probably well do without it," she noted.

Ms Fieldman suggested the government is too quick to legislate or issue directives, adding that she thought teachers could do a better job with less intervention.
