Sheffield schools encourage youngsters to eat more healthily
November 19 2009
Pupils in Sheffield are being encouraged to adopt healthier eating habits as part of a national scheme entitled Let's Get Cooking, according to a report by the Sheffield Star.
Around 60 children and adults came together to learn how to cook at a community event local news provider the Sheffield Star reports. The healthy eating project is sponsored by the Sheffield-Let's Change4Life Programme and the Big Lottery Fund, which have contributed £20 million.
"Cookery clubs will help encourage more children in the city to enjoy cooking and preparing their own meals," Amy Plant, NHS Sheffield's Schools lead for the Sheffield: Let's Change4Life Programme, told the news provider. "We want the children of Sheffield to show their parents how to put the goodness back into family tea times," she said. Ms Plant added that although convenience foods were fast and cheap, they are usually high in sugar and fat.
This is not the first time that schools try to encourage their pupils to eat more healthy. Trials of free lunches in primary schools and healthier alternatives for secondary school pupils have been launched by campaigners across the country.
