'Pupils should get more recognition for taking harder subjects'

Students in the UK who are taking tougher subjects should be getting more recognition by the government, according to Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education.

"What the government should be doing is instead of giving more points for easier subjects, they should be reversing that and giving more points for the harder subjects which employers and universities value more," Mr Seaton said.

He also said that if pupils are being encouraged to do easier subjects, put children from deprived backgrounds could be put at a disadvantage.

His views emerged as a report Civitas found 43 per cent of the 40 academies interviewed would disclose the subjects and qualifications their puils had been entered for at GCSE.

In other news, primary schools in Newcastle have reason to celebrate after having reached top results in the national tests for 11-year-olds. The list of schools with high scores includes Byker Primary with 83 per cent of pupils reaching the government target of Level 4 or better at Key Stage 2.
