Manchester school 'is top of the class'

A school in Manchester which was known for its truancy record has been identified as one of the best in the UK thanks to the help of a full-time attendance officer, according to a press report.

Absenteeism at St Peter's secondary school in Gorton was one of the worst in the country in 2004 with levels at 15 per cent, but thanks to attendance officer Geoff May that's no longer the case, the news provider added.

"We have an excellent full-time attendance officer who has gone out and forced relationships with pupils and their families," headteacher John McNerney was quoted as saying by Manchester Evening News. "He has helped them overcome difficulties which have stopped them attending."

The Ofsted report said the school was "outstanding" and a place where pupils from various social and economic backgrounds achieved well.
In other news, a primary school in East Devon has been praised by inspectors of Ofsted, the education watchdog.

The inspectors have praised the school's "caring, friendly and supportive environment", according to Devon's Express & Echo.
