Surrey infant school brings together its learning
July 02
Pupils at Horley Infant School in Surrey enjoy six-weekly events as they move between phases of learning, the BBC has reported.
The school has adopted the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and organised a hot air balloon release as well as helping children turn its hall into an aeroplane as part of their learning.
By adopting thematic units, the curriculum aims to teach related subjects around one topic.
The IPC is "hands-on, it's skills-based, it's more innovative, there's more energy to it," Year Two teacher at the school Gaynor Goss told the BBC.
Ms Goss says that while the school still meets the national curriculum standard, it hopes to move on from more knowledge-focused learning.
She said: "Children take more responsibility for their learning - it taps into that enthusiasm."
The UK curriculum has changed over time and now it is less likely that children will study languages.
