Wirral pupils attend 'healthy schools'
February 05 2010
Schools in Wirral have been praised for achieving 100 per cent national health school status, a local news report has said.
"This is a great achievement for Wirral schools and we are the first borough in the North-West to have 100 per cent of its children attending a school with this accreditation," Marie Armitage, joint director of public health for NHS Wirral, was quoted as saying in the Wirral News.
The achievement does not involve only healthy eating and exercise but ensuring that every pupil is safe and happy.
Wirral's success is credited to the excellent partnership between the local council and NHS as well as the efforts of the entire school community.
In other news, pupils as young as seven will be taught about sex and puberty in compulsory lessons, according to new guidelines from the Department of Children, School and Families.
From the age of 11, students will receive lessons about pregnancy, contraception and sexually-transmitted diseases and will be encouraged to discuss issues such as same-sex relationships and civil partnerships, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
