Canterbury on the look out for trainee teachers

Potential teachers in Northern Ireland should consider heading to Canterbury Christ Church University.

This is the message from the higher education institution, which is actively recruiting graduates from the province for its prestigious postgraduate certificate of education programmes, reports the Irish News.

In an effort to fill teacher shortages currently being experienced throughout the UK, the university is hoping to attract Northern Irish students.

This is largely based on the positive track record previously left by those from the region, programme director Graham Birrell told the news source.

"They are incredibly determined to become great teachers and their attitudes towards the course and to teaching are an inspiration to everyone," he stated.

Canterbury is particularly keen to recruit students to specialise in languages, science, design and technology or ICT.

A summer school was recently held at the university to encourage local disadvantaged pupils to stay in education after the age of 16.
