School recognised for its stance on healthy eating

A Scunthorpe-based school has received national acclaim for its attitude and approach to healthy eating.

Broughton Junior School pupils run a 'five fruit and vegetable portions a day' club and also help prepare healthy balanced meals for the canteen, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.

Underlining the school's healthy eating ethos, headteacher Peter Hargrave revealed that the produce used for the meals was grown on-site.

"We even include the vegetables grown in our school allotment in dinners as pupils work on it at lunch times," he told the publication.

"And, as part of their curriculum, the idea is to watch the food go from plot to plate.

He continued: "According to figures, only 40 per cent of children eat school dinners nationally and 46 per cent eat them in North Lincolnshire.

"But at our school, 70 per cent of children eat school meals, which is way above the national average."

Mr Hargrave will attend a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace where the school will be honoured by the British Hospitality Industry.
