Govt spends to increase classrooms

Reacting to concerns schools will be short of places, the government has announced it is to give local authorities £220 million.

The money should help create more places in areas facing shortages but will not be available until April next year.

Schools secretary Ed Balls explained that the current shortfall was not entirely of the government's making.

Mr Balls said some local authorities simply "did not plan or budget effectively for how rising birth rates would affect them locally".

The money will go to schools that experience a 15 per cent increase in the demand for school places for children aged four and five.

The schools minister Vernon Coaker explained that the government's policy will help "give the remaining local authorities more scope to target pockets of deprivation or underperforming schools sooner or get more value for money".

When teaching in the UK it is likely educators will become familiar with the current Building Schools for the Future programmes.
