Teachers urge parents to help in sex education

Teachers have urged parents to help them provide sex education for pupils.

Schools across Scunthorpe are issuing parents with a reading list to help them tackle sex and relationship issues with their children in the home, as well as in schools, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.

Lynette Smith, a sex and relationship education trainer, claimed that the books would help parents discover the best way to broach the subject with their children.

"This book list is a starting point for parents who want to talk to their children but don't know where to start, what to say or how to say it," she told the publication.

Lynne Goodall, head of integrated youth support services in North Lincolnshire, claimed that the plans could help cut the rate of teen pregnancy.

She added: "We want to help accelerate reductions by getting parents to complement sex education provided in schools - it's a partnership."

Meanwhile, exam board OCR has revealed its intention to offer a GCSE course in humanism by the September 2009.
