'Teachers need more help with dyslexic pupils'
June 22 2009
Teachers should be given more help in learning how to identify dyslexic pupils, a government report is expected to say.
Released today, the study calls for more help for parents and carers, as well as extra support to help dyslexic pupils perform better in education.
Prepared by Sir Jim Rose, the report has already been warmly received by charity Dyslexia Action.
Chief executive Shirley Cramer said if its recommendations are implemented in full they "will provide the necessary building blocks for improved identification and support for children with dyslexia and literacy difficulties".
Having evaluated the abilities of 59 dyslexic children in 12 separate schools, researchers from Oxford-Brookes University concluded teaching must be devised that works with their individual strengths and weaknesses.
According to the British Dyslexia Association confusion between directional words - up/down - and difficulty in placing words in sequence are early indicators of the condition.
