'Exams for all', claims body

Exams should be geared towards pupils of all abilities, the Good Schools Guide (GSG) has claimed.

Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the GSG, was discussing the difficulty of A-level examinations when she made the comments.

She said: "Exams have got to suit all pupils. You can't just gear exams for the top five per cent, because what are the others going to do?"

Ms Fieldman added that though she did not believe A-levels were currently too easy, an option for change could be creating an extension paper for pupils in need of a higher challenge while keeping the basic exam accessible to everyone.

The Conservative Party recently called for an independent review of A-levels.

David Willetts, shadow secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, told the Guardian that teaching in the UK could be changed by allowing universities to set their own entrance examinations alongside A-levels.
