Sinnott teaching fellows set to help community with government funds
April 24 2009
Teachers from across the country are to have the chance to spend time working with members of their local communities as part of a new initiative.
Those that have successfully secured a place as part of the Steve Sinnott fellowship have plans for a number of schemes and will share what they learn with fellow teachers, reports the Times Educational Supplement.
It is hoped that this will help commemorate the life of former general secretary of the National Union of Teachers Steve Sinnott, who died suddenly last year at the age of 56.
Overall, 15 teachers or other staff from disadvantaged areas will benefit form the £400,000 government-funded scheme.
Among these are Carl Ward, director of innovation and development at Sutherland Business and Enterprise College in Telford, family outreach worker Marcia Clack and assistant principal of North Liverpool Academy Shaun McIrney.
These members of teaching staff have been chosen after developing initiatives that will help their local communities.
At its annual conference this month, members of the National Union of Teachers voted to boycott Sats in 2010.
