Young teachers are more dedicated than ever, says head teachers association
July 29 2009
The National Primary Headteachers' Association has leaped to the defence of teachers, noting their dedication to the job.
The organisation's chair, Peter Price, has defended the qualifications and skills of people teaching in the UK following a report by thinktank Politeia, which suggested they are less well educated than teachers in Europe.
Mr Price noted that young teachers in London and the UK show more dedication than ever and their skills cannot be measured by qualifications alone.
"The skills for our young teachers are very broad and you know you can get a very, very good teacher who could be 2:2 qualified," he commented.
People hoping to teach in the UK do not have to have a first class or master's degree and can bring with them their own experience and knowledge.
"I don't think it's an absolute correlation to say that they won't be a good teacher if they are not a first class or honours [student] et cetera. That's my opinion," Mr Price went on.
The nationally recognised teaching qualification for graduates is the Post Graduate Certificate of Education, often abbreviated to PGCE.
