Primarolo: Behaviour in schools is improving

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo has said the behaviour of pupils in the UK is improving.

Her comments followed the release of statistics by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, which highlighted cases of disciplinary action taken by people teaching in UK.

The statistics noted that where a pupil's parents had appealed against the child's expulsion, in 65 per cent of cases the school's verdict remained unchanged.

According to the figures, suspensions in primary schools for attacking other pupils fell, as did the frequency of suspensions in both secondary and primary school.

Ms Primarolo says the action the government has taken "is working in improving discipline in schools", because the government has "given teachers the powers they asked for to tackle bad discipline".

The National Union of Teachers has told the government it would be short-sighted of it to make any cuts to education spending while in a recession.
