Report calls for teacher pay increases
February 03 2009
Teachers should be offered significant pay increases for working in deprived areas, it has been argued.
A new report calls for staff who work in challenging schools to be offered financial incentives "to ensure that teaching quality and teacher turnover is no worse in deprived areas than elsewhere".
Commissioned by The Children's Society, the publication states that the number of children with significant emotional or behavioural difficulties has doubled since 1974.
And in order to address this, it makes a number of recommendations for the education sector.
Apart from calling for more money for teachers who work in inner-city schools, the report also suggests that school league tables and Sats should be abolished to reduce an undue stress on children.
Furthermore, it calls for schools to become "values-based communities", which promote mutual respect between teachers, parents and children.
The new recommendations follow a recent announcement by the government that golden handcuffs of £10,000 would be offered to the country's best teachers who commit to spending three years working in challenging schools.
