UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

“EEA nationals who are recognised as qualified school teachers in an EEA member state may apply for QTS in England under the terms of Council Directive 2005/36/EC without the need for further training.” - General Teaching Council for England (GTCE).

Most teachers trained overseas need to apply for visas and are limited to 4 years teaching as an unqualified teacher in the UK. They then have to standardise their overseas qualification to the UK standard by gaining UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). However, if you are an EEA trained teacher you have an advantage; this rule does not apply to you! You could automatically qualify to gain QTS by simply applying for it through the GTCE. This means you:

• Can be paid at a higher rate
• Have no need to undertake an additional training program
• Have a UK recognised qualification
• Are not limited on the number of years you can teach in the UK

All EEA citizens interested in teaching in the UK are advised to visit the Obtaining qualified teacher status section of the General Teaching Council for England’s website to obtain up to date information.
