Pacific Island Culture Group
When I first came to the UK, I purposely moved to the county of Essex to immerse myself in British life. As far as I was concerned, I didn't move to the UK to hang out with Kiwis! I was a pioneer, a culturally sensitive visitor to these shores here to experience another culture, a different way of life! And so I did for three years ...
Until I went back home for the first time in three years for my cousin's wedding. Part Samoan like myself, she married a Maori boy on a marae in Putaruru. After a beautiful ceremony, performances by the groom's family, a hangi and much laughter, I was fully reminded of all that I love at home.
'The Big Draw' at the British MuseumFortunately for me, not long after returning to the UK I met one of the dancers from Beats of Polynesia - a London-based Pacific Island dance group who perform with live drums! After plucking up the courage to finally attend one of the practice sessions, I have now performed with them for nearly two years.
Beats of PolynesiaGiven my initial avoidance of all things Kiwi here in the UK, I love sharing my culture with my new friends. It has been a great opportunity and allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds!
