Why Herts, Beds, Bucks and Northants?
TimePlan Education has been placing primary and secondary teachers in schools throughout the local authorities of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Luton since 1996. During the last two years we have also been working closely with schools in Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.
The stunning counties lie north of London and offer a wonderful location in which to live and teach. The region is an area of outstanding beauty, with excellent shopping and leisure facilities, modern bustling towns and quaint villages. There are excellent road and rail links into London and north to the Midlands. The major airports of Heathrow, Stanstead, Luton and Birmingham are all within easy reach. Home to a number of low cost airlines, cheap flights can be found to hundreds of destinations throughout Europe and North Africa – You will never be short of things to do!
The schools we cover
There are over 1700 schools within the seven Local Authorities in our region, ranging in size from 32 pupils up to 1500. Schools vary in character depending on their location and socio-economic environment and range from small rural village schools to those with an inner city flavour such as the large academies in Watford, Luton and Northampton. Schools throughout the counties are well represented in league tables, generally overall performances are well above the national average.
Education systems vary between authorities. Unlike the majority of England, Bedfordshire still operates a 3-tier system with lower, middle and upper schools. Middle schools offer the perfect teaching jobs for those teachers trained to teach junior/intermediate aged pupils. Within Bedfordshire the unitary authority of Luton has moved away from the 3-tier system and operates a 2-tier of primary and secondary schools.
Buckinghamshire is one of the only authorities in England to have a completely selective education system, where pupils transfer from their primary school to either a grammar school or secondary modern school depending on how they perform in the eleven plus test. Buckinghamshire grammar schools are among the highest achieving schools in the country. Within Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes is another unitary authority, and like the majority of the UK operates a comprehensive education system. An ever expanding area, Milton Keynes is home to several new schools with more schools planned to open over the next few years.
Most primary schools in Hertfordshire are amalgamated infant and junior schools. Secondary schools are in the main comprehensive; however there are a few schools in and around Watford that are partially selective, offering a proportion of places according to ability or aptitude. Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire operate a completely comprehensive education system.
Everyday TimePlan has a number of teaching vacancies placed with us, ranging from daily supply to long-term positions. We currently have teachers in long-term primary and secondary teaching positions in schools throughout the seven local authorities and have daily supply teachers living throughout the region.
Things to do
The counties of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire have something for everyone. With so much to see and do, it is a good job that teachers get great school holidays.
The National Trust and English Heritage protect hundreds of historic houses, abbeys, castles, ruins, stately homes, palaces, national monuments, mills and gardens throughout the UK, many of which can be found our five counties. We would recommend the 19th Century, award winning Waddesdon Manor, Dunstable Downs and the Whipsnade Estate, Blenheim Palace, St Albans Cathedral and Woburn Abbey.
If you have a love for literature then the following will be of interest; Roald Dahl museum and Children's Gallery and Milton’s Cottage in Buckinghamshire, The John Bunyan Museum in Bedford, and north of Northamptonshire in Stratford-upon-Avon you will find Shakespeare Country.
When the weather is good a day out in Oxford, strolling around the famous university colleges is hard to beat. And there is St Albans (boosting some of the best Roman remains in the country), Woburn safari park, Whipsnade Zoo, Bekonscot model village near Beaconsfield and various canal and river boat cruises down the Thames, Great Ouse and Grand Union Canal.
If you are keen on sport and the great outdoors there is plenty to see and do. Wherever you live you will not have far to travel to see some of the countries top rugby, football and cricket teams in action. If you love motor sport then Northamptonshire has it all; Silverstone, Rockingham and Santa Pod. It may be as far as you can get from the coastline, but our lakes, aquadromes and rivers mean that you can sail, windsurf, water-ski, canoe and row. If you want to prepare for a skiing holiday in the Alps then look no further than indoor snow centres in Milton Keynes and Hemel Hempstead. If you enjoy playing sport then there is a multitude of local sports clubs catering for all ability levels.
The unique theatres and majestic stately homes around this beautiful part of the country play host to productions, concerts and recitals throughout the year. ‘The Stables’ in Milton Keynes is one of the UK’s leading live music venues, offering live music for all tastes.
Accommodation
You can expect to pay anything from £50 per week for a room in a shared house to £575 per month for a one bedroom flat. Rent varies from place to place and is generally lower the further you are from London. TimePlan has sourced a number of good guest houses close to public transport that are ideal for when you first move into the area. A number of local authorities and schools have accommodation for teachers. TimePlan have also built up good relationships with a number of independent landlords and letting agents, and will only be too happy to discuss options with you.
Socials
Our social events are held every half term in various locations around the counties. Where possible we try and select a location that is easily accessible, however covering such a wide area it is not always possible for some of our teachers to join us. The dates of upcoming socials can be found in our socials section.
