Things to do

Southampton is a vibrant, modern city which offers a warm welcome to visitors. It is a popular leisure and cultural destination and is one of the premier venues for sailing and water sports, with some of the best marina facilities on the south coast. With superb shops, beautiful parks and gardens, it is an ideal base for exploring the south coast, the New Forest and the Isle of Wight.

Portsmouth is rightly famed for its naval heritage, but besides this there is so much more for you to discover. The city has a vast choice of attractions such as the Historic Dockyard, which includes Nelson's Victory and The Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s flagship.

Winchester is situated on the edge of the South Downs, surrounded by meadows and watercress beds. An unspoiled cathedral city, Winchester is England's ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. One hour from London, this is England as it ought to be. Popular for its shopping, architecture and quirky open air events, Winchester is most well known for its cathedral and for the Great Hall which houses the legendary Round Table.

The New Forest, once the royal hunting preserve of William the Conqueror, where wild ponies and cattle still have right of way and roam free, is renowned for its ancient woodlands and wilderness heaths.

Bournemouth, internationally renowned for being one of Europe's most fashionable resorts, is a vibrant city with beautiful sandy beaches, shopping, night life, first-class attractions, beautiful gardens and summer festivals. By day, the town is a shopper's paradise, a combination of high-street favourites and exclusive boutiques.

Salisbury is a thriving tourist centre because of its proximity to Stonehenge. There are an abundance of historical buildings peppered throughout the city - including the majestic sight of the Cathedral’s spire, Britain’s tallest - together with modern high street shops.

A short boat trip from the mainland takes you to the Isle of Wight, one of the most visited holiday resorts in the south. During the sailing season the waterfront is a kaleidoscope of colourful sails. Yachtsmen from around the world participate in the island's prestigious sailing events. Best known of these is Cowes Week - held annually at the beginning of August.

Our schools

Whether you are Primary, Secondary or Special Needs trained, and whether you want to work in a highly academic environment or work with students from challenging social backgrounds, the south has schools to suit your preferences. With over 800 schools to choose from, you will have an unrivalled diversity in teaching opportunities; from the challenges of the urban and city school through to the rural primary which will provide a vibrant environment for development. Accommodation

TimePlan South offers an accommodation service to assist you in your search for both short-term and long-term accommodation. Once we have identified where you are going to be based we can arrange temporary accommodation for your first few nights.

There is a wide range of temporary accommodation available which starts from as little as £20 per night. Rental costs vary depending on the area and the type of accommodation. Expect to pay around £350 for a one bedroom property, rising to £850 per month for three bedrooms. House sharing is more affordable and cost around £70 - £90 per week. The ideal areas to be based are Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth, Salisbury or Bournemouth. There is a wide choice of accommodation in the area at reasonable prices. Generally speaking the further away from London you are, the cheaper the accommodation gets.

Socials

Regular socials are held in the area and the attendance is usually very good. Meeting up with teachers and non-teachers, both from the UK and abroad, on a regular basis will give you an opportunity to reminisce about life back home or talk about your UK experience. Socials are usually held every 4 – 6 weeks, and take place in a local “watering-hole”.
